Serial cost savings
January 1st 2008

Recent upgrades to the boiler house at Kellogg's Wrexham are set to reduce energy costs in fuel oil and natural gas and, at the same time, meet all foreseeable legislation on emissions.

When the plant opened in the late 1970s FKI Babcock, now incorporated within Wellman Robey, supplied two of the three steam raising boilers that are still in operation today. In 1987, a fourth Wellman Robey twin furnace unit was installed. This boiler, rated at 46 000 lb/h (20t) running at 10barg and firing heavy oil, became the main steam supplier.

Several fuel saving features have been incorporated, with savings already being achieved from the Economisers fitted in the boiler's rear smoke box. Economiser tubes have serrated fins which increase net efficiency when firing on natural gas from 89.92 to 93.26%, with light oil now being the secondary fuel. A speedy pay back is anticipated.
