Proper lubrication pays
September 1st 2006

Proper lubrication is key to maintaining high performance of compressors claims, FUCHS LUBRICANTS.

Poor quality compressor oil will reduce the life of the compressor; it will probably offer reduced performance, resulting in shorter drain intervals, excessive oil carryover, separator blockage and increased maintenance activities for manufacturers between services.

Unlike other lubricating oils, air compressor oils have no governing organisation, so no official performance standards exist.

Whilst own brand compressor manufacturer oils are generally of high quality, the experience of individual lubricant manufacturers can be beneficial.

As well as improving compressor performance, reducing breakdowns, maintenance and consumption and increasing the life of filters and bearings, the oils naturally lower friction co-efficient also means that energy consumption is lower, reducing overall operating costs.

"The cost of synthetic alternatives has probably been prohibitive to business in the past," explains FUCHS: "but the benefits far outweigh the pence per litre difference. Companies are beginning to notice the intrinsic link between purchasing of consumables, such as oil, and their maintenance budgets." Investment in higher quality synthetic oil, although more expensive in the short term, realises long term benefits for manufacturers that ultimately reduces costs.
