Knowledge is power
May 1st 2006

With unprecedented energy prices showing no signs of abating, automatic metering and targeting (AM&T) is an easy method to see measurable results quickly.

These systems measure and analyse energy usage using monitors to collect data, which is processed by software into readable reports, eliminating superfluous data typically associated with monitoring and controls systems.

Because data is gathered at halfhour intervals, a holistic figure reflecting a real picture of site activity is created, including seasonal variations, site occupancy and other relevant stimuli.

Problems are highlighted in real time so that a small incident doesn't develop into a costly situation.

According to Dan Radford, MD of energy monitoring and refrigerant leak detection company Parasense, a metering and monitoring system can save time, money and aggravation. Knowing the peaks and troughs in energy sage provides leverage to negotiate rates with suppliers.

He explained further: "Once you have an understanding of your energy usage, you can identify projects which could have substantial savings. However it is important to consider the life cycle costing of equipment. It is easy to make a purchasing decision based on the lowest capital cost, but with figures of 6.5-7.5p/kwh becoming a reality, would you want to saddle your company with an option that may not be the most energy efficient?"
