Positioning system accepts curves
September 1st 2006

The BPS 34/37 barcode positioning system from Leuze Mayser uses barcode reading technology to determine accurately to within 1mm the position of automated handling devices. A significant advantage of the system is its ability to operate around curves as well as compensating for ramps and uneven surfaces. This makes the BPS 34/37 barcode positioning system ideal for a whole variety of applications whenever systems must be driven automatically such as in electric overhead conveyors, storage and retrieval cranes, shuttle cars and various transfer units as well as in manufacturing plants for monitoring skid-position on automated flow lines.

The BPS 34/37 system operates in conjunction with an easily applied acrylic, self-adhesive barcode called Codeband also supplied by Leuze Mayser in up to 10,000m lengths. Sections of the Codeband are applied over the route to be monitored, however Codeband need only to be applied in locations where it is necessary to know the exact position of a 'vehicle'. The specification of the durable, scratchproof Codeband includes UV light, moisture and chemical resistance allowing its use in most environments, even down to -40C.

Installation is simple, each vehicle to be tracked has a BPS 34/37 unit permanently fixed to its body. As the vehicle moves the scanner reads the Codeband. The position value is then passed via a standardised SSI or direct Profibus interface to the drive system of the vehicle for which the position is to be determined.

Design of the BPS 34/37 barcode positioning system with its advanced optics ensures reliable measured results and repeatability of 1mm, with an entirely contact-less scanning distance from 60 to 140mm.
