Asda keeps the bugs at bay
May 1st 2008

Flying insects and prevailing winds are being kept at bay by Airbloc air curtains at Asda's distribution depot in Chepstow.

Nine 4m high loading bay doors, between 3.5 and 4m wide, are in use 24h and the 45 000m2 facility is expensive to heat to the required constant of 15°. A solution was provided by vertically positioned Airbloc AB ambient air curtains beside each door. At critical velocity across each doorway the air curtain produces a sheet of cold air, providing the turbulence needed to exclude winds (up to 11mph) and flying insects.

Mervyn Bull of Encon, the company that installed the curtains, says "The cold air blasting across doorways is highly effective in preventing wasps and flies getting in and potentially contaminating the food.
