Collapsible trays protect products for Asda
September 1st 2005

Following successful trials, Asda is using Linpac Materials Handling’s collapsible Maxi-Fold tray for produce delivery. The stackable tray is used to transport fresh produce lines from supplier to retail floor in a one-touch-replenishment system designed to better protect produce.

A nesting tray was used previously but, although it provided good use of space, it occasionally caused product compression and with it the threat of a possible compromise to quality.

The Maxi-Fold is used in conjunction with a newly developed Linpac universal dolly that is replacing its previous flat bed delivery units, allowing quick and easy movement of stock within the DC and retail environment.

Rick Bourne, Asda’s general manager for produce, comments "Open topped trays are a bonus as they allow quick visual recognition of contents. This means there is no need to disturb trays in the stack and we can achieve quick and easy stock replenishment."

Growers can harvest straight into the tray and the produce is not touched again until the customer selects it in store. This can significantly improve the quality of the product and potentially extend its shelf life.
