Troubled water bridged
March 1st 2006

Demag Cranes and Components has supplied an electric wire rope hoist which is helping in the construction of the new Swale Viaduct. The new 1.25km road bridge is part of a major upgrade project being carried out by Carillion Construction.

Demag supplied an adapted model from its DH range of electric wire rope hoists. The 2.5tonne SWL hoist was modified to provide the 40m height of lift required for the bridge construction. Inverter controls are incorporated within the lifting system to ensure smooth travelling and positional accuracy, even in the windy conditions that prevail 40m above the estuary.

The Demag hoist is suspended from a bespoke gantry which permits total hoist travel across the deck of almost 40m width, as well as along the span of the viaduct.

The entire solution was tested at a remote location before being installed.
