Heavy lifting
September 1st 2004

Demag Cranes and Components has made and installed lifting equipment systems for the Airbus Deutschland facility in Germany where fuselage sections for the Airbus A380 are made.

Sections are up to 10.8m long, 6.7m wide and 2.3m high and weigh up to 1.6t, and are suspended from four points during lifting and moving operations.

Three overhead double girder cranes were installed with spans of 32, 37 and 39m. Two cranes move sections of fuselage skin to workstations. The third lifts the section to a secondary treatment facility. To allow cranes to coordinate the required five parallel directions of load movement, Demag fitted them with rotating crab units.
