Powering Royal Mail
March 1st 2005

EnerSys Motive Power has supplied its Hawker brand of batteries and chargers for the lift truck fleet at Royal Mail’s road distribution hub near Daventry.

Constant availability of battery power is crucial to sustain uptime for the hub’s round-the-clock operations.

Hawker Perfect floodedcell batteries have been supplied for the 60+ lift truck fleet. Included are powered pallet transporters and specially-adapted low level order pickers for handling the Royal Mail’s special York cages. These use Perfect 24V batteries, while the centre’s counterbalance trucks use 48V units.

EnerSys Motive Power supplied two batteries per truck to ensure 24h availability.

The battery charging and changing station has 64 Hawker Powertech high frequency chargers that offer a level of energy efficiency that is said to be up to 20% higher than 50Hz chargers.

The charger automatically detects the battery’s level of discharge and supplies only the amount of power needed to restore full charge. It will automatically accommodate batteries of different capacities.

A dedicated Hawker engineer undertakes battery topping-up and other maintenance tasks.
