SSI AT HEART OF LEAN LOGISTICS March 1st 2005 Live storage systems and containers from SSI Schaefer are at the heart of a new ‘lean logistics’ strategy being implemented at the Robert Bosch alternator production site on the outskirts of Cardiff.
Instead of delivering bulk quantities of goods by forklift at the Miskin complex, KDR live storage systems and transit containers are used.
Using stand-alone, lineside storage facilities, parts are fed from the main ‘supermarket’ area in the containers at regular intervals throughout the day and delivered direct to their exact point of use.
As well as eliminating the time and effort spent by assembly operatives in searching for relevant items, Bosch’s new manufacturing strategy is aim to: reduce inventory levels and lead times; improve overall efficiency and productivity; release space previously given to storage for more productive purpose; and improve plant safety by reducing the dependence on forklift trucks.
