Space-saving storage

EFD Energy Networks has installed five space-saving vertical carousel storage units from Couzens Storage Solutions to provide faster, more efficient parts support to its field service engineers.

The 4.9m high carousels provide 810m of linear shelving and a total shelf space of 476m2 in a machine footprint of only 40m2, reducing the walking distance per item picked, and giving fast access to any item.

The carousels hold some 80% of parts picked, as opposed to the previous system where some 80% of parts were taken from pallets.

The current configuration uses a 30 position Pick by Light system and an alpha/numeric keyboard, with pick instructions from RDTs.

However, the machines could be easily configured to operate with a PC-linked stock control system.

Four of the carousels fit beneath a mezzanine; the fifth is 5.120m wide, housing 4.250m wide carriers.

A double chain-drive system with eightfold suspension provides smooth operation, with virtually no tilting or lateral deviation.
