Hand and finger injuries cut July 1st 2004 Introduction of gloves containing DuPont Kevlar brand fibre has drastically reduced hand and finger injuries at the Oldbury site of Tyco European Tubes.
The company had been concerned about the number of cuts and lacerations to hands and fingers of its steelworkers.
Risk assessments, management discussions and input from BM Polyco and steel workers them-selves identified the need for four different types of gloves. Considerations included cut resistance to a minimum of level 4, dexterity, oil resistance, comfort and value for money.
Trials of gloves containing the Kevlar brand fibre proved successful and resulted in selection of: Heavy Duty Kevlar gloves (Volcano); Chrome leather gloves with Kevlar liner (Granite 5); Kevlar with palm-coated Nitrile (GPKV2R); and Kevlar gloves with fully coated Nitrile.
