Skin saver
November 1st 2004

A small centrifuge known as ‘alfie’ has reduced the incidence of dermatitis for employees of a component manufacturer in the North of England.

Metalworking coolant used to become contaminated with tramp oils. Apart from affecting the efficiency of cutting tools, it changed the pH and concentration level of the coolant, providing a breeding ground for bacteria that, when in contact with an open wound or scratch, caused dermatitis.

Now, an operator plugs the mobile Alfie centrifuge into a power source, inserts the hoses into the coolant tank, and it sets to work using high speed centripetal force to remove tramp oils, metal fines and particles down to 1micron.
