Backing Sandown to be a success January 1st 2009 A high quality seminar programme organised by the British
Safety Council and an exhibition supported by many of the
industry's major manufacturers and service providers,
Health & Safety 09 from the Western Business Exhibitions'
stable looks like an odds-on winner
Now in its third successful year, the
latest in the series of regional
exhibitions and conferences,
sponsored by DuPont, will take place at
Sandown Park, Esher, Surrey on 24th and
25th of February 2009.
One of the most popular elements of
Health and Safety 09 – South
is its free seminar programme
which will be organised by the
new Official Educational
Partner – the British Safety
Council. The organisation
plans to focus on 'health' as
well as safety. Nina
Wrightson, chairman, says
"With the epidemiology of
health being a less
straightforward issue than
safety, as exposure is not as
easy to predict as it takes
place over the long-term, it
is often ignored and we
intend to tackle this problem."
Listen
The educational programme takes place on
both days of the event. Seminar highlights
on the first day include Constructing Best
Practice by Michelle Aldous of Constructing
Better Health, a 'not for profit' organisation
set up by the construction industry to
implement a national scheme for the
management of occupational health across
all sectors. Central to Michelle's presentation
is the Construction Health Assessment
Toolkit (CHAT) which demonstrates 'best
practice' in the management of work related
health issues at site level.
Also taking place on the first day is
Asbestos – The Hidden Killer presented by
Stephanie Beach of the Health and Safety
Executive. Beach will provide an update on
current asbestos issues and recent initiatives,
including a summary of the HSE's national
media campaign designed to raise awareness
among tradespeople of the risk of exposure
to the substantial amounts of asbestos still
contained in many buildings.
Seminars on the second day include Top
10 Noise Control Techniques by Peter Wilson
of the Industrial Noise & Vibration Centre.
The presentation provides details of the 10
engineering noise control techniques that
can be applied to some of the most common
noise problems. In some cases these
techniques will actually save money too,
making the process self financing.
Covering a subject which continues to be
responsible for the most number of deaths in
the construction industry is Working at
Height by David Thomas of structural
engineering company,William Hare. He will
cover all aspects of safety when working at
height, setting out the simple hierarchy for
managing and selecting equipment for work
at height and outlining some of the
fundamental measures required for a safe
system of work as required by The Work at
Height Regulations 2005.
A number of practical seminars will take
place on both days of the event. These
include: The Importance of Training
Manual Handling – Train the Trainer,
presented by Frank Bayliss from event
partner Principal People. Bayliss will discuss
the dilemma of training personnel to lift
safely and avoid injury and will offer advice
on how training should be pitched to achieve
the best effect.
Look
In addition to the busy educational schedule,
more than 100 exhibitors representing many
of the top brands in health and safety, will be
available in the exhibition area. For example,
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is an
area which is well covered with the show's
main sponsor being DuPont, and Ansell
Healthcare Europe and Aearo Technologies
as event partners. Other PPE suppliers such
as BM Polyco and Marigold Industrial have
stands and the breadth of PPE covered
includes specialist protective clothing and
gloves, eye wear, ear plugs, Hi Vis garments
and more.
