Key to safety at the mill
May 1st 2005

manufacturer of folding boxboard uses safety interlocking systems from Castell to give risk-free access machinery at its Cumbria mill.

Implementation of the HSE initiative Making Paper Safely has seen Iggesund Paperboard introduce many new procedures and Castell has supplied KSS20 solenoid-controlled interlock switches, key exchange boxes and 96 access locks with corresponding colour-coded and numbered keys.

These are installed on the gates two board machine dryers and ensure dryers have stopped completely before keys are released to allow access gates to be unlocked.

When a dryer is turned off, the solenoid energises, allowing the trapped key to be removed from the KSS20. This puts the machine into jog mode, permitting only controlled movement. Until the key returned, the dryer cannot enter any other mode. The initial key then releases colour-coded keys from the key exchange box that allow access through the gates.

It cannot be removed from the exchange box and reinserted into the KSS20 until all keys have been returned to the key exchange unit.
