Respiratory kit for Avian flu

Although avian flu viruses like H5N1 do not usually infect people, several instances of avian flu infections in humans have been recently reported in a number of locations throughout the world. 3M explains how the provision and correct use of adequate respiratory protective equipment can help minimise the risk of workers contracting the virus.

For those who are involved with disease control and eradication activities, DEFRA currently advises that an FFP3 respirator with exhalation valve offers suitable respiratory protection against airborne transmission. Where a good seal cannot be achieved with other respirators, eg because of facial hair, a full hood powered respirator should be considered. 3M supplies two EN149:2001 FFP3 respirators for industrial and consumer applications: the 3M 8835 and the 3M 9332.
