The lightweight half-concha style means the plugs can be worn for long periods without distress. An adjustable attenuation valve controls the airflow, thereby providing protection while allowing the wearer to hear what they need to hear.

Variphone service personnel periodically test the protector in the wearers ear at their place of work.
