Contractor takes steps to boost ladder safety
July 1st 2008

To increase awareness of the importance of safe working practices among staff, Northern-based building maintenance and refurbishment contractor, cityresponse, brought in health and safety consultant Peter Carter who turned his attention to the issue of working at height.

He says "I found Ladderlog on the web. It is a clear, visual safety tagging system which allows for the proper recording of ladder inspections, therefore providing an inspection audit trail. The staff working in the stores needed a user-friendly system, but above all, one where results and records could be printed off as hard copy – a simple at-a-glance check, vital when you are dealing with 60 to 80 ladders at any one time." Ladderlog has increased awareness of safety generally. Tags offer an immediate visual inspection, not just of the ladder's inspection history but of its ownership.

Incorporating inspections into a staggered, six monthly recall programme has minimised downtime, and cityresponse has linked ladder checks with van inspections.
