Gardner Denver air compressors make double savings for Scottish Stamping
April 27th 2006

CPA Engineered Solutions Ltd won the contract to service/maintain the air compressor for the Die Shop at Scottish Stamping's Axle manufacturing plant. It was determined that this compressor was oversized and was maintaining an operating pressure in excess of that required.

Using a proactive approach to energy and environmental awareness, these issues were discussed with Scottish Stampings who requested an affordable solution. A Gardner Denver VS 80 variable speed compressor was chosen to match capacity exactly to demand, and during low usage periods, would shut down completely.

This compressor utilises a soft starter to stop/start as often as required and the pressure band is extremely narrow. The result? Savings of 25% per annum and a return on investment within a two year period. As a result CPA was then invited to investigate the Press Shop air system.

CPA measured the demand via a vortex metering system (see ETSU good practice guide 126) and established that the compressor was both oversized and inefficient. A Gardner Denver Air-Cooled VS155 variable speed compressor was installed, immediately achieving a 28% saving in energy. Also, with its ability to instantly ramp-up capacity in line with demand, the operating pressure was then reduced by 1.5 bar producing 24% additional savings. Anticipated return on investment is 18 months.
