Powrmatic 'transforms' energy efficiency at Numatic
August 23rd 2006

Powrmatic NV heaters and heat recovery units have transformed the heating performance and reduced energy costs within two buildings at Numatic International. The gas-fired system has also created extra floor space within a component store operated by the company.

Numatic manufactures domestic, commercial and industrial cleaning and maintenance equipment from its Somerset HQ. Having used Powrmatic equipment at numerous locations on its 20-acre site, it specified the recently launched NV range for its latest requirements in a project that was undertaken by specialist contractors, Vicforge Air Systems.

The NV heaters have been installed in two phases over the past year. The first installation comprised four NV 120 heaters plus 16 Calecon heat recovery units, within a brand new 55, 000 sq ft manufacturing facility. This was later followed by a further four NV 120 heaters and more Calecons installed as part of a planned refurbishment of an existing component parts store within Numatic’s headquarter complex. Intended to replace existing oil-fired, floor-mounted heaters the new NV’s have created valuable extra storage space, whilst also being significantly cheaper to run and much quieter in operation.

“A building is just a shell, effectively – it is the equipment – such as lighting, heating and ventilation - that makes it an effective and productive working environment, “ explains Andrew Smith, Head of Manufacturing at Numatic. “The roof-mounted NV heaters have freed valuable floor space and transformed a cold building into a very comfortable working area. They should also deliver major gains in energy efficiency. We are very satisfied with the Powrmatic system.”

The heaters were used in combination with Calecon heat recovery units which reduce energy costs further by eliminating the build up of heated air in high roofed buildings. The compact units simply blow warm air from high level, back down to operational areas and work stations.

The NV 120 has an output of 120 kW and features a tubular heat exchanger, automatic ignition and in-shot gas burners. The resulting combustion efficiency of 92% easily meets the requirements of the Government’s new ECA initiative – enabling Numatic to claim 100% capital allowance in the first year against the supply and installation cost of the NV heater.
