Online service to lighten burden on SMEs
December 10th 2007

The British Safety Council has announced the launch of its new, free online assessment tool, in response to concerns raised regarding the legislative burden borne by SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises).

It is a welcome arrival in light of a report released by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), which highlights the crippling impact of health & safety legislation on small businesses. This new product has been designed specifically to help SMEs make sense of and comply with all the different regulations in this area.

SME’s employ 60% of the private sector workforce, and this burden could potentially stifle not only their growth potential, but ultimately the UK economy. Now, with the BSC’s new assessment tool, they can quickly and easily check and benchmark their current performance against a full range of health and safety indicators without incurring the cost of appointing an external adviser.

Jonathan Bramsdon from the British Safety Council says; “We recognise that health & safety legislation is comprehensive and that compliance for smaller businesses can be a time-consuming affair. So, we’ve developed this free, new tool specifically for them, to quickly and easily check their current performance against a range of health and safety indicators and obtain guidance on areas for improvement.”

The new assessment tool is part of the BSC’s aim to help organisations achieve greater operational health, safety and environmental performance. Initial trials have proved so successful that an environmental version of the assessment is now being put together. Details can be found on the BSC website at www.britishsafetycouncil.org
