EMF Directive: Are you prepared?
May 29th 2007

Health and safety consultancy, Praxis 42 has launched an eLearning Module in preparation for new legislation planned for 2008, concerning electromagnetic fields (EMFs) in the workplace.

Electromagnetic fields are a form of non-ionising radiation and the EMF directive developed as part of the Physical Agents Directive is intended to protect workers by outlining minimum health and safety requirements covering their exposure to the risks arising from EMFs. In general, electricity supplies and electrical goods generate low frequency EMFs and communication devices and transmitters generate high EMFs.

“EMFs arise whenever electrical energy is used, so any company whose employees use or may be exposed to anything that may generate an EMF such as electric motors, generators, microwave ovens or industrial plastic welding machines will need to assess risks, develop controls and train employees to demonstrate compliance with the intended Regulation and the requirements of the Directive,” explains Dr Gary Mason, Director at Praxis42.

In 2008 EU members are expected to have put in place legislation that meets the requirements of the EMF Directive which will mean all employers must consider the risk of EMFs to their employees and perform at the very least a risk assessment to ensure workers are not exposed to EMF levels higher than set out in the Directive.

“Despite the far reaching nature of this Directive, organisations are often unaware of the issues and implications that arise from EMF’s. Our range of EMF products and consultancy services help address this issue and provide employers, health and safety professionals, landlords and facility managers with the competence and training they need to ensure their organisation complies,” adds Dr Mason.

The new EMF eLearning Module from Praxis42 is a comprehensive training course that aims to help organisations be fully aware of EMF in the workplace, where it occurs or is generated, the risks involved and the guidelines covering safe working levels, enabling duty holders to establish safety precautions and controls.
