New steam boiler range reduces fuel bills
May 29th 2007

On average, the capital cost of a boiler is less than 1% of the cost of fuel it will consume during its lifetime. Running old inefficient boilers just isn’t a wise move when installing new super efficient plant could quickly pay for itself in fuel savings and continue saving fuel costs year in year out.

Byworth R&D project almost came to an early close

Understanding that running costs are an important factor for steam users, Byworth Boilers embarked on a two year Research and Development Project in conjunction with Leeds University. The brief was to ascertain and prove the optimum configuration of shell, furnace, and tubes for maximum boiler efficiency and low emissions by rigorous testing.

The project almost came to an early close, when, on testing the existing Byworth Yorkshireman range of boilers, it was found that efficiency results for this range were actually higher than previously claimed and better than similar boilers available. However, rather than resting on laurels, the company persevered with the research which has culminated in the launch of the Yorkshireman2 boiler range.

80% increase in heat transfer

The generously sized shell and furnace design of the standard Yorkshireman boiler has been proved to generate best quality dry steam with low emissions and so has been retained in the Yorkshireman2.

The most exciting feature of this new boiler is the revolutionary X-ID boiler tubes. Internal helical ribbed tube walls give an 80% increased heat transfer over normal tube. This increase in heat transfer gives the Yorkshireman2 an efficiency figure of around 92.3% (NCV), over 2% more efficient than other similar new boilers. Moreover, when compared to running costs of existing boiler plant, depending on the design, type and condition, fuel savings could be as much as 20%.

Reduced down time

An additional benefit is that X-ID tube requires much less cleaning than traditional tube helping to maintain peak efficiency. Soot build up in normal boiler tubes inhibits heat transfer and therefore requires regular cleaning. X-ID tubes therefore also reduce this maintenance down time. X-ID tubes are only available in UK & Ireland from Byworth Boilers.
