Metallised labels: no problem November 22nd 2007 When you’ve been creating distinctive print solutions since 1827, it’s hard to imagine there’s a problem you haven’t encountered before. However if like Darley, a specialist in the production of wet-glue and metallised labels for the brewing industry, you are always looking to introduce new products and solutions, there can be times when the printing process becomes challenging.
One of these challenges is the control of static. Often called the invisible enemy of printing, it can cause many problems including sticking, misfeeds and alignment problems, all resulting in high scrap rates and slower production speeds.
Production Director at Darley, Mick Hobster, suspected it was static that was causing some problems when the company was printing its metallised labels. He called in static control experts, Meech, to assess the situation and suggest a possible solution. Meech manufactures a comprehensive range of static control equipment and its application engineers ensure that each problem is dealt with quickly and efficiently and the customer is left with a solution that matches its exact requirements.
In the case of Darley, installing a simple but effective system using Meech 261 Flexi nozzles powered by a Model 977v3 Pulsed DC Controller solved the problem.
"Printing on metallised paper can be problematic due to static. However since the installation of the Meech 261 Flexi nozzles on two presses, our press teams have reported a significant improvement in run performance on our metallised stocks. Meech service post installation during the first few weeks of production has been excellent." says Mick.
