Dealing with rising energy costs and increased production March 26th 2008 The Authentic Food Company, a market leader in supplying quality, authentic international cuisine, faced up to the double challenge of a considerable increase in production and relentlessly rising energy costs. The existing steam generator also gave considerable down time as the intrinsic design could not cope with the large surges of steam demand.
Plant engineers therefore decided to source a horizontal steam boiler of the traditional three pass wetback design which would give better reliability, and also reduce gas usage and emissions. This type of boiler, if designed with generously sized shell and furnace, produces excellent quality steam and a more homogenous cooking process.
A Byworth Yorkshireman2 2000 kg/hour steam boiler, incorporating X-ID firetubes, was installed at the Stockport division. X-ID tubing, with internal helical ribbing, increases heat transfer in the tube passes by over 80%, typically giving 2% increased overall boiler efficiency and, importantly, reducing emissions. Having been in operation for some weeks now, the Byworth Yorkshireman2 is already proving a wise investment, significantly reducing fuel usage. Its reliability is allowing the company yet further increases in production.
The success of this project led the Sharston division to install another Byworth boiler, this time a 1500kg/hr reverse flame, fully installed off site into a purpose built boiler house, which was lifted into position and quickly installed to existing services.
