Rental boilers can help save fuel
May 28th 2008

Temporary steam and hot water boilers already provide an essential service for process and heating applications, enabling the continuance of activities when resident boilers are for some reason unavailable.

However, there are an increasing number of cases where the renter inadvertently discovers the true extent of the inefficiency of existing boiler plant. With the lifespan of boilers being typically 25 to 30 years, often the boilers in use are far too big for the operations which they are now serving. Although they may be still very reliable and well maintained, their consumption of power and fuel to provide just a fraction of their capability is very costly. When bringing in temporary boilers, it is possible to hire a size of boiler which better matches demand and run far more efficiently. If hiring from a boiler manufacturer, it is possible to request a boiler with the latest technology, such as high efficiency X-ID boiler tube, which will reduce fuel consumption yet further. The comparisons could be very surprising, and help to assess the feasibility of a boiler replacement project.

Beware when comparing fuel costs as it may be that the fuel oil for the hire boiler has been bought at top price, whereby the gas for resident boilers has been negotiated down to the best price possible over a fixed period. Take the actual fuel consumption of the temporary boilers and convert to the equivalent gas consumption at the current rate paid to get a closer indication of the savings.

If a boiler replacement project does take place, of course temporary boilers continue to play their part in the changeover period. Also, the traditional role of hire boilers in providing emergency cover to manufacturers, hospitals, schools, prisons etc continues to be vitally important.
