How do you find out how efficient your steam boiler is?
October 1st 2009

Many organisations running older boiler plant do not have the luxury of accurate steam demand and efficiency data. In order to improve efficiency, the first obvious step is to bench mark the current performance before analysing the feasibility of various projects to improve.

Byworth Boilers are now offering steam metering equipment for hire either to be installed with the existing plant or, an easier option is to hire metering equipment along with a temporary rental boiler. The data gleaned is especially important where a new boiler project is being considered as often the steam output requirements are in reality different to what would have otherwise been specified. Due to modern technology the new boiler required is often smaller than the one it is replacing saving not only on capital expenditure but more importantly on running costs.

Capital expenditure for steam boilers is on average only 1% of the total lifetime costs. In these difficult days of restricted credit it is all too easy to get fixated on purchase price. However fuel saving options such as super efficiency X-ID fire tube will often save more than the premium paid in less than 12 months, so it is vitally important to bear in mind the bigger picture of lifetime costs, or even just the running costs of the first few years. The Carbon Trust are keen to help SME’s invest in energy saving equipment and offer unsecured, interest free loans. Byworth sales engineers are fully conversant with the application procedure and are happy to help guide the process.
