COOL SOLUTION FOR TURKEYS
September 1st 2005

To comply with recent legislation that calls for meat to be maintained below 4°C at all times, Bernard Matthews has installed two modules, each containing three Contherm scraped surface heat exchangers (SSHEs) at its turkey processing plant in Halesworth, Suffolk

One of Alfa Laval’s most interesting heat transfer products, the Contherm incorporates blades that scrape the heat transfer surface at pre-determined intervals to reduce fouling and prevent hot or cold spots developing

The exchangers are used primarily for thick and viscous food products and are finding a growing number of applications in the meat processing sector

The company evaluated contact freezers, air chillers and horizontal scraped, surface heat exchangers, but felt that none could compete with the Contherm’s compact, vertical shape

The equipment required modifications during trials to meet Bernard Matthews exacting standards, including the addition of a fixed output gearbox to keep motor speed constant

Each bank of three Contherms takes up to 1.5t/h and can operate non-stop for 16h/day.
