Energy efficient blast cooling
January 1st 2007

Tricool has unveiled a range of air blast fluid coolers that are said to offer a cost effective alternative for applications that require cooling fluid at temperatures of 35°C or above all year round. The range offers capacities to 600kW at nominal duty conditions; however, customised units are available for those applications that require a non-standard selection.

To reach temperatures of 26°C and above, or to reduce the dimensions of an air blast cooler, Tricool offers models with an adiabatic spray system using nonferrous spray bars and an ecomesh panelling, which evenly wets the surface of the cooling coils. The combination of air passing over the coils and the evaporation of surface water is said to create a greater cooling effect than conventional dry air cooling, enabling lower water temperatures to be reached.

The company says that, when installed alongside a chiller as part of a free cooling system, an air blast cooler can make substantial energy savings. In low ambient conditions, it is automatically programmed to operate, allowing some or all of the compressors in the chiller to shut down.
