Self-venting
May 1st 2005

Stored energy from liquid or gas locked in a process system once a valve has been closed can be a serious hazard downstream when equipment is being maintained, says Flowserve Flow Control (UK).

To minimise the risk, it has introduced a special ball valve that gives a positive release of downstream energy when the valve is closed. Based on the Worcester Series 44, three-piece design, the valve uses a ball and seat combination that allows normal flow when open, but automatically discharges downstream pressure when closed through a vent in the base of the valve.
