Corporate comfort
March 1st 2008

Variable speed drives from ABB are helping visitors to Manchester United's Old Trafford stadium to dine in comfort, however heated things may get on the pitch. The drives control fans for the air conditioning system serving two buildings that form the stadium's Quadrant expansion project.

The Quadrant buildings have added 7600 seats to the stadium.

The space underneath houses five kitchens and 10 restaurants. It is in the corporate lounges that the stadium's building management system relies on 33 ABB drives to control the comfort of diners. Drives range in capacity from 3 to 7.5kW.

Laing O'Rourke authorised installation of the ABB drives.

Building services manager Andy Schilling says that, in addition to reliability, a key attraction was the drives' native, or built-in, BACnet communications capability which enabled Laing O'Rourke to reduce the amount of cabling around the buildings, simplifying installation.
