Measures steam use

Accurate flow data delivered by 11 swirl meters from ABB is enabling William Grant to identify areas for potential energy savings at its Glenfiddich distillery.

Steam for the distillation process is generated from a central boilerhouse. Recent investment in a third boiler increased the site's steam producing capacity by about 25%. Design of the steam distribution system allows steam to move in both directions from the boilers and back from the site if it is not needed.

An accurate, multidirectional steam meter that could be retrofitted into William Grant's existing pipe network was needed to measure steam.

The ABB swirl meters are used back-to-back. They require just three pipe diameters upstream and one downstream, making them suitable for retrofit applications. Measuring mass flow rather than volume, meters are accurate to within ±0.5% of reading, with a turndown that is said to be up to 10 times greater than that of an orifice plate.

Energy consumption can now be pinpointed to exact departments and processes and data used to find and address problems.
