DCS upgrade
July 1st 2007

Invensys Process Systems has won a contract, worth in excess of £250,000, to supply a modern Foxboro I/A Series distributed control system (DCS) to Total Bitumen for its site in Preston, England. The Preston plant converts heavy oil feedstock into various grades of bitumen for use in advanced road surface coatings and roofing materials.

As part of an HSE upgrade at the site and to meet the need for a platform that would allow expansion into other plant areas and improved data management, Total Bitumen decided to replace its ageing plant PLCs with a new automation system housed in a central control building.

This new system will oversee activities such as oxidation, kegging, blending, storage, and rail offloading.

The contract includes training for operators, maintenance and engineering staff and will be implemented by Projen, resident site E&I contractor for Total.
