Power health check
September 1st 2006

Deltron Emcon, part of the Abacus Group, is offering a free harmonics distortion test for manufacturers and processors required to meet G5/4 Recommendations for power quality. The no-obligation on-site test provides an instant measurement of the harmonic distortion level, enabling the company to review non-linear loads and make any necessary adjustments.

The G5/4 Recommendations are applied by the UK's Network Operating Companies (NOCs) to power distribution from substations connected to the grid, and require emission limits and mitigation measures to be recorded. Used in NOC contracts for installations built or upgraded since 2001, the Recommendations are increasingly used as criteria in assessments made by utility companies as to set up or continuation of connection.

Some of the problems caused by harmonic distortion can be resolved by the de-rating of equipment such as transformers and motors, and circuit overload trip settings and the use of harmonic filters to reduce or cancel the harmonic components. Once the test has been conducted, Deltron Emcon can provide advice on appropriate solutions.
