Active harmony
September 1st 2003

Active harmonic filters have been added to Mitsubishi Electric Automation Systems portfolio of drives equipment, following a sourcing agreement with AIM Europe, one of the leading developers of this technology. Chris Cusick, Mitsubishis drives manager, comments Active filters are the way ahead in fighting mains corruption. Their performance:cost ratio is unrivalled by competing technologies, and users are adopting them so rapidly that they will become the dominant type within a few years. Active filters often match harmonic bridge controllers for performance, but at a fraction of the cost. In operation, they absorb incoming harmonic currents, invert them and feed them back to the mains to neutralise further currents. A notable characteristic is their fast response to load changes, an area where Mitsubishi believes all other technologies struggle to maintain performance. Mitsubishi will initially introduce the technology to the water industry, but expects interest from other sectors to be just as keen.
