Gearbox service March 1st 2005 A gearbox failure on a drag chain conveyor at Rugby Cement’s South Ferriby works gave Flender the opportunity to demonstrate the effectiveness of its fasttrack service – even though the gearbox was not one of its own.
Vibration monitoring had detected an early bearing failure on a primary and main gearbox on the clinker drag chain five weeks prior to a major kiln shutdown.
Cracking was found at the root of the gear teeth and the company decided to replace the two gear-boxes with a single, energy efficient unit with a higher service factor.
Flender delivered an FZG B45H12 gear unit within two weeks, and Rugby Cement believes it to be a superior design. Benefits claimed include: torque rating of 75 000Nm; a single unit combining gearbox with motor flanged on that replaces a separate motor driving the main box; quieter, more flexible operation; and longer service intervals.
