Chiller chosen for biscuit role
July 1st 2009

Chilled water provided by a Daikin EWAQ130 air cooled R410A chiller supplied by Daikin Airconditioning UK, is playing a significant role in the production of biscuits at the United Biscuits subsidiary McVities' 'flagship'Harlesden factory.

Joining other Daikin glycol chillers at the site, the new 130kW unit cools 28t loads of sunflower oil, delivered in tankers, at a temperature of 30°C.

Oil is transferred to a holding tank and pumped through three 6m long hygienic shell and tube heat exchangers mounted in series to be cooled to 25°C over a 2h period.

During the blast cool mode the chiller supplies glycol at 5°C.

The chiller is then reset to supply water at 10°C during the part load phase to improve efficiency and reduce running costs.
