Gas solution to power supply problem November 1st 2004 GHP technology from Sanyo has provided a solution to a power problem encountered by JD Wetherspoons at its Wibbas Down Inn in Wimbledon.
Over the years the pub’s air conditioning system comprising 14 10kW heat pump split systems had evolved and in the winter of 2003 problems occurred that led to the replacement of half of these units with a single Sanyo GHP VRF system. Power failures had started to occur and were due to power consumption exceeding the building’s 200A supply.
Beverley Design Services was called in and, after ascertaining that the 3-phase incoming mains supply could not be increased to 300A, contacted Sanyo distributor ESS for details of its GHP technology. This uses mains gas or LPG as its main power source and single-phase electricity for start-up and fan operation.
To provide the power savings required and reduce capital expenditure, 50% of the existing equipment was replaced with a system comprising a single 56kW outdoor unit. Gas service pipework is of sufficient capacity to allow the remaining seven systems to be replaced in future.
The pub was able to continue trading while installation work took place. Joe Collins, managing director of Associated Cooling Services, the company responsible for the pub’s planned maintenance and service, comments Installing the units was easy and straightforward as it was exactly the same as the many other VRF installations we have carried out.
The GHP is significantly quieter than the seven units it replaces so, although noise wasn’t a major issue here, the neighbours appreciated the reduced sound levels.
Bob Cowlard, Sanyo Air Conditioners national sales manager, adds Electricity prices rose by about 15% last year and there are serious doubts as to whether the national grid can sustain the nation’s increasing level of consumption. Gas will have a huge part to play in the future of VRF air conditioning, and clients such as Wetherspoons experiencing the benefits will enable take-up to continue at a pace.
