Modified for market needs
November 1st 2004

Randalls Fabrications has supplied a specially-designed, purpose-built Simpak 1800 waste compactor to meet the hectic demands of Bristol’s wholesale fruit and vegetable market.

The unit, supplied and maintained by Waste Compaction Equipment, is one of four waste compactors operated by the Wholesale Fruit Centre that runs the market.

The Simpak 1800 has a 1.7m3 charge box and a 7.5kW motor driving up to a nominal 130m3/h, at a compaction force of 28 000kgf. The hopper of the machine for this application has been modified for both tippler and fork lift use by including a large, left-handed opening interlocked door. This means the compactor can be loaded from above by lifting up wheelie bins and also through the door, direct from pallets on fork lift trucks.

All waste from the market, including perishables, is compacted, with the exception of wood, cardboard, paper and plastics that are recycled. The Randalls’ machine is fast and compacts waste so efficiently that an average of 8t can be removed in one load. The compactors are emptied twice a week on average.
