Turbine blade manufacturer RLC Callender is using tough borosilicate glass tube lights from Waldmann Lighting to provide the illumination for its machining operations. The new lighting uses high-efficiency fluorescent lamps which are housed inside a watertight borosilicate glass tube.

"The glass units are suitable for use in the machining zone," says Waldmann Lighting's Rodger Henderson. "When exposed to colant and swarf, polycarbonate tends to crack, which causes leaks. The material also degrades with exposure to ultraviolet light so that the clear tube turns milky.

Borosilicate glass tubes have proved to be a very durable and cost-effective alternative."
