Boom lifts help cranes grow
March 1st 2005

Crane engineers at Southampton Container Terminal used boom lifts from AFI Aerial Platforms to help them extend the height of five 900t dockside gantry cranes. They did this by lifting them 5m so that prefabricated leg extensions could be put into place.

Seward Wyon designed a 1000t capacity computer-controlled jacking system to lift each crane to the required 5.5m. However, it needed powered access machines to guide leg extensions and strengthening pieces and then weld them into position.

Taking advantage of the flexibility of AFI Genie and Haulotte boom lifts, Seward Wyon was able to complete the project to schedule. The Genie S85 has a working height of 27.5m and an outreach of 24m, enabling it to work around the cranes and the jacking system to get operatives into position.
