SAW SPEEDS PANEL CUTTING
May 1st 2004

A Striebig Evolution vertical panel saw, supplied by T.M. Machinery Sales has simplified panel cutting at plastic fabricator and model maker, York Plastics (Engineering).

No longer are two people needed to load panels on to a beam saw, hold them down flat while they are being cut and move them into different positions on the table.

The Evolution handles all cutting of polycarbonate, polypropylene and acrylic sheets ranging from 2.5 by 1200mm to 3 by 2m and from 1.5 to 20mm thick. It has also cut 25mm thick MDF slices.

It is now normally a one-man job to load panels onto the saw, which frees four other engineers at the family business. Thinner panels go on in multiples.

Director Philip Crookes is impressed with the accuracy of the cut and the smooth, clean finish it gives, and the fact that it has eliminated a great deal of manual labour.

He says that as the saws blades move through the panel, instead of the panel being pushed through the blade, panels are less likely to get scratched.
