Hollow bar
March 1st 2009

Sandvik stainless steel hollow bar is said to offer advantages for component manufacture with cost reductions of over 40% said to be possible. The combination of hollow bar and Sanmac stainless steel enables cutting speeds and feed rates to be increased, while tool wear is said to decrease as a result of the inclusions within the material.

Sulphides and oxide inclusions improve chip breaking and reduce tool wear without affecting the material's corrosion resistance and mechanical strength.

Sandvik says engineering and machining companies can save on costs by using extruded hollow bar with pre-defined outside diameter and inside diameter. This saves tooling costs, operating time and eliminates a complete operation, while also saving on waste material.
