Small arrival
September 1st 2004

maxon motor’s family of high-tech micro-drives now includes the company’s smallest ever motor.

At just 6mm in diameter, the RE 6 has a power rating of 0.3W, just a little lower than the 0.5W of its slightly bigger brother, the RE8.

Both are built with ceramic shafts of 0.8mm dia. The shafts are virtually wear-free and are said to be much more resistant to breaking than their more conventional counterparts.

An absence of magnetic detent is a characteristic of these motors and they feature maxon ironless winding, rapid acceleration due to a low moment of inertia, low electromagnetic interference, low inductance and high efficiency.

While the RE 6 and RE 8 have precious metal brushes, others in the family are brushless and electronically rather than mechanically commutated. The smallest is the EC 6 with a 6mm dia and 1.2W rating.
