IMO Precision Controls has launched its latest AC motor drive, a powerful new inverter that fits in the palm of your hand

Automation and control company IMO Precision Controls recently unveiled its new range of technologically advanced AC motor drives. Compact enough to fit in the palm of your hand, the new Jaguar Cub inverter delivers high performance. Carrying all the low cost, high functionality features expected of IMO’s Cub Brand the new ‘baby’ Jaguar is suitable for both end users and OEMs alike, in applications wherever space and performance are at a premium.

The new Jaguar Cub drives deliver a higher motor starting torque using STV technology, a simplified version of IMO Jaguar’s torque vector control system for consistently powerful operation. STV control offers: low torque ripple, smoother operation; high performance with auto voltage boost and slip compensation; simple set up for easy commissioning; comprehensive protection - phase loss, short circuit and earth fault, open circuit, PTC and thermal magnetic overload with adjustable time characteristic. Running at 5Hz and employing advanced magnetic flux estimator and motor slip compensation with auto boost, starting torque can be as much as 150% or more. Also, due to the growing requirements for low leakage the Cub offers integrated EMC filter variants offering different variants of filtering.

The new drive is available in ratings from 0.4kW to 2.2kW in single phase/ 230V, and 0.4 to 4kW in three phase/ 400v. As Stuart Kemp, applications manager - drives at IMO says “The new features will broaden the market we can address.” Cubs rated 1.5kW and above can be specified with an integral braking resistor, while smaller models can easily be connected to an external bolt-on braking resistor option making it suited to applications such as stopping higher inertia loads that call for large reserves of regenerative braking power.

By keeping motor loss to a minimum, the Jaguar Cub saves electrical power in fan or pump applications and thanks to its technology improves voltage control performance and reduces motor instability at low speed to about a half or less, at 1Hz than that of a conventional inverter. Even when the motor load fluctuates, the slip compensation function ensures smooth operation.

The Jaguar Cub comes with timer operation, input and output phase loss protection, loss of load protection and thermostatically operated long life cooling fans designed to operate for seven years at 40°C. The four digit display will also indicate maintenance information to enable lifetime estimation/replacement - there is also a ‘service due’ output. To reduce audible noise and save even more energy, the Cub’s cooling fan can be turned off when not required. The Cub allows the connection of a DC reactor to limit mains supply circuit harmonics and is fitted with a PTC thermistor input and PID control.

R485 or Modbus RTU type communications are supported via an optional internal interface card. Jaguar Loader software can be used to set-up, monitor performance, interrogate alarm conditions using the standard RS485 comms link. Other features include side by side mounting to IP20, on board frequency setting potentiometer, non linear V/F pattern and auto energy optimiser. There is also an optional remote operator keypad panel, complete with parameter copy function, and extension cable for panel door mounting.

Like all IMO Jaguar drives, the Cub comes with a full five year warranty.
