High precision heat treatment
January 1st 2007

Manufactured by Barloworld Scientific, Techne fluidised sand baths are often used when very precise control of heat treatment processes is required, particularly when special alloys used for applications such as medical and orthodontic implants are involved.

The company says that while many industrial ovens and furnaces provide temperature stability and uniformity around ±5°C, sand baths typically achieve temperature stability of ±0.2°C and temperature uniformity of ±0.5°C.

The equipment also provides fast recovery times from quench and is said to be less expensive and safer to use than salt baths. Components are easy to clean after processing.

The standard Techne sand bath is a benchtop unit with a cylindrical chamber measuring 385mm deep by 165mm diameter. It has a temperature range from 50 to 700°C controlled by a PID.

Automated processing can be achieved through linking the equipment with a computer via an RS232 interface.
