Competition among welders
September 1st 2009

The initial round of the ShipWeld 2009 competition, which welding and cutting specialist, ESAB Group is sponsoring, was held at BVT Surface Fleet, Clyde's Operations Skills Development Centre in Govan.

It aims to provide welding craft competitions for apprentices in keeping with their shipyard training requirements and to encourage young second-year trainee-welders to develop their skills in a competitive environment.

The competition is split into two levels, the first being the Internal Ship Yard competitions, where entrants face a series of challenges using MIG/MAG and MMA techniques.

Winner and runner-up go on to the next level.

From the two shipyards (Scotstoun and Govan) that entered the competition at Govan, Daniel Collins was the winner, while Stuart McLeod came second and Russell Phipps scooped the third award.
