Production boost
Increasing demands from the East for Ireland and UK-sourced baby and milk powders has persuaded a leading dairy producer to increase production and add a new high lactose foodstuff to its portfolio.

However, process issues occurred while treating the high lactose product and Holmach was consulted for a solution. The product’s composition required the previous SSHE (Scraped Surface Heat Exchanger) to hold it at temperature and under pressure for extended periods of time. Holding the product in this state using the machine prompted a Maillard reaction, leading to changes in the product’s viscosity and colour. Subsequently, the system was slowed down by a reduced efficiency in the exchange surface of the SSHE. Over a 4h run this dropped by 50%, with a full clean down of the SSHE being required after an 8h shift. The client was only able to meet half its target for full production, with maximum flow rates of around 4000L/h. By the end of a shift there was a noticeable deterioration in quality resulting from the Maillard reaction, with the high lactose good thickening and browning.
Holmach suggested the installation of a Terlotherm, by Terlet. Having previously fitted these machines in the company’s factories in Malaysia, there was already a precedent and knowledge within this company to support the installation. The Terlotherm offered three key advantages in comparison to the previous SSHE.
- Using a Terlotherm doubled the efficiency of heat exchange, with the same factory footprint.
- The pressure drop on the product side of the Terlotherm is less than 1 bar.
- Access for cleaning is much simpler, as the machine’s mechanical seal does not need to be disturbed.
As installation is very straightforward with the Terlotherm, the client’s factory undertook it themselves successfully. They have since met their target of 8000L/h for full production, with no signs of a Maillard reaction.
Installing a Terlet’s machinery has allowed the client to meet customer demands and produce a high quality product with minimal disruption to its existing plant and equipment. Demands on the product pumps have been reduced and the product flows at a lower average pressure through the system. Being especially strong in the dairy industry, the Terlotherm also has applications for products such as cream, soft cheese and crème fraiche.
