Successful tank repair
After 60 years in service, two neutralisation tanks at a German brewery had suffered extensive internal corrosion damage. Belzona dealt with the root problem, recoating the entire internal area and removing the need to replace the tanks.

The brewery commissioned the testing of five Belzona products to verify their chemical resistance. The materials were exposed to four acidic and basic chemical solutions with different concentration for six months. Belzona 5811 (Immersion Grade), exhibited no optically detectable surface damage. The aggressive alkaline and acid media caused no alteration to the material and the product was selected as the optimum solution. Belzona 5811 is a brush or spray applied coating that provides a high degree of protection from a wide range of chemicals.
Following grit blasting, Belzona 1111, a solvent free repair composite safe to use in confined spaces, was used to resurface the heavily pitted surfaces of the tank, to profile any corners and angles and to allow a smooth transition of the coating in order to minimise stresses. All critical areas, where a high percentage of failures occur, such as edges and weld seams, were initially stripe coated with Belzona 5811 to ensure penetration of the substrate profile and specified minimum coating thickness. After this process was completed, 176 litres of Belzona 5811 were applied by airless spray in two coats on the total internal area of the tanks at approximately 252m2.
Under normal ambient conditions full chemical cure of Belzona 5811, would have been seven days. However, in order to accelerate curing time, hot air was applied with the aid of a 350kW diesel heating system at a flow rate of 24,000m³/hour into the tanks and the coating achieved its full chemical resistance at 46°C within 3 three days.
