Established in 1656 and expanded over the years, Adams' Grammar School now comprises a variety of buildings including a Georgian mansion and modern state-of-the-art science laboratories, all of which required a flexible, low cost heating solution.

Rob Mountford, Director at HMM Mechanical in Stoke on Trent, specified the very first Evomax at the School in August 2014 to replace an old, inefficient floor standing boiler situated in the admin block plant room. The School was impressed with the reliability, ease of use and quick installation of the Evomax, not to mention the subsequent reduction in running costs, and a programme was launched to replace all the old boilers with Evomax models.

Mountford explained, "Due to the variety of ages, layouts and uses of the buildings at Adams' Grammar School, the versatility of the Evomax has been extremely beneficial in meeting the different specifications. The basement plant room in the library block, for instance, had limited accessibility, so the compact size of the Evomax was an essential factor to allow ease of transportation and fitting."

He added, "We are extremely confident specifying Evomax boilers as they are very easy to fit and wire up, plus we have never experienced a fault or a complaint from a customer. We are also using Ideal Commercial's Evomax accessories for each installation, such as the insulated Frame & Header kit and the Common Flue Header, as they made the installation much easier and reduced fitting time by a good few days."

The Evomax boilers are providing heating and/or hot water for five buildings including the admin block, the outdoor swimming pool, the brand new sixth form building, the canteen and a Georgian mansion called Longford Hall that provides accommodation for 50 pupils. A further five plant rooms will be upgraded with Evomax boilers over the coming months to complete the school's replacement programme.

The most recent installation, which took place at the Longford Hall accommodation building, required the boilers to run on LPG as connection to the mains gas was not a viable option due to the building's more remote location. The previous boilers at the Hall were antiquated oil-fired boilers situated in a basement plant room, so Rob's team adapted an existing building on ground level to house the Evomax boilers. This allowed the new boilers to be fully installed ready for the changeover, which minimised downtime to a single day so as not to affect comfort levels for the building's inhabitants. The gas management system within each Evomax appliance is specially designed by Ideal Commercial Boilers so it can be modified for use with LP gas while ensuring the boiler offers the same advantages as those fuelled by mains gas, including compatibility with accessories like Evomax Frame & Header kits and Ideal Commercial's modulating sequencers.

The Evomax's extremely high efficiency of up to 110% part load was an important factor for all buildings to minimise energy use, but in particular for the outdoor swimming pool, where the boilers are running 24/7. Bearing in mind the previous boilers here were inefficient, oil-fired appliances, the school is enjoying substantial fuel savings and environmental benefits as a result of this installation alone.

Graham Hook, site manager at Adams' Grammar School, commented, "We are extremely happy with the Evomax boilers. All appliances have been running without any issues at all and they are very easy to operate and programme. We had a power cut at one stage and I was very pleased when the boilers automatically reignited the moment the power was reinstated. We have noticed a significant reduction in running costs since the boilers were installed, and we are looking forward to calculating our total energy and cost savings after the final appliances are installed."

Hook is also keen to take advantage of the Evomax's new 5 Year Warranty, saying: "We are now employing Ideal Commercial to commission all new boilers scheduled for installation, as this means that we can benefit from the 5 Year Warranty offered on the range for even more peace of mind."
